In December 2025, NL Times reported that 6,690 Americans had applied to move to the Netherlands that year, the highest number in a decade. Jana spoke to NOS for the piece and explained exactly why the Netherlands keeps rising to the top of the list.

Her answer was straightforward: Americans instinctively look for English-speaking countries when they think about leaving. Canada, the UK, Ireland. The problem is those countries are extremely difficult to get into unless you have a specific professional background. The Netherlands, Jana pointed out, is effectively also an English-speaking country, with nearly the entire population fluent, and it has one of the most accessible visa pathways for Americans anywhere in Europe.

She also spoke about what is actually driving people to make the move. It's not just politics in the abstract. It's the fear of sending your child to school and not knowing if they'll come home. It's the calculation of whether you can afford an emergency room visit. Jana described widespread fear among people with Latin American roots and LGBTQ+ backgrounds in particular.

The numbers in this piece speak for themselves. The interest is real, it is growing, and it is not slowing down.
